![]() Dear Subscriber, With the advent of spring, the ASA continues in our ongoing effort to fight for principled democracy and the many freedoms that we hold dear, despite the challenges we face in Washington. Today, we fight a new battle - one that is not waged on foreign soil, but waged against constitutional democracy and the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Despite immense public opposition, Congress went against the wishes of the American people by passing a massive health care bill which carries a trillion dollar price tag along with a mandate that requires every individual, regardless of age, to purchase health insurance or face punitive penalties for noncompliance. Instead of promoting the virtues of free enterprise, progressives and liberals in Washington are espousing the socialistic ideals of a European-style welfare system. In his famous speech, Give me liberty of give me death, Patrick Henry said, "The Constitution is not an instrument for government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government - lest it come to dominate our lives and interests." Seniors, we grew up in a different America - one that understood the high cost of freedom and the many sacrifices that were required to secure those freedoms. From the fields of Gettysburg to the beaches of Normandy, generations of Americans have enjoyed the prosperity that was obtained through the enduring spirit of the American people. That enduring spirit still resides today in the faces of everyday Americans who continually devote their lives to securing the American dream. Collectively, we can send a loud message to Washington as millions of voices gather together with one cry - passing health care reform will cost congressional Democrats their seats and majorities this fall. Now is not the time to shrink back into the throes of a government health care overhaul. We must continue to take action by keeping this issue alive and open for public discussion. In the following months, help us take this battle to the state level as many states are issuing challenges to the constitutionality of government-mandated health care. Thank you American seniors for doing your part to voice your concerns over government-run health care. This month, nearly 10,000 seniors participated in our March online polls regarding the health care debate. We appreciate your feedback and encourage you to continue speaking out on the issues that matter most by participating in our online member blogs and polls. In one of our recent polls, we asked you " If Congressional Democrats use reconciliation to pass health care legislation, do you think it will adversely affect Democrats in the 2010 elections?" In this poll, more than 97% of those polled believed using reconciliation would be the final nail in the coffin for Democrats, as many will lose key seats in 2010. Seniors, don't become weary in well doing. Your voice is being heard throughout the nation as evidenced by previous elections in Virginia and Massachusetts. In 1773, mounting opposition stood between the colonies and their desire to be free from the oppressive rule of English parliament and increasingly heavy taxation. In light of incredible odds, it was the determination and unconquered spirit of the American people that won the war. With Kindest regards,
