It is clear that the Democrats' plan for a government takeover of health
care is bad news for America's seniors. Health care decisions are some of
the most personal and private decisions we ever make. The idea that
Congress might give unaccountable bureaucrats just as much, or even more,
say in these decisions than patients and doctors is simply unacceptable. In
order to achieve their long-time ideological goal, liberal Democrats have
included provisions that would weaken Medicare. The proposed hundreds of
billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare Advantage alone would do incredible
harm to seniors' access to quality health care.
It is rather stunning that any organization whose mission it is to advocate
for seniors could support such a plan. Indeed, many Americans who used to
belong to AARP tore up their membership cards in disgust after learning of
the AARP's support for a legislative effort that would be detrimental to
seniors' health care. Thankfully, the American Seniors Association offers
folks the opportunity to access the many benefits of membership in a
seniors' organization without sacrificing the principles they hold dear.
Although at times the level of misinformation in this debate has been both
frustrating and overwhelming, the American Seniors Association has provided
its members and the wider public with the vital information it needs to
understand what's at stake. It must be noted, however, that the possibility
of a government takeover of health care still exists. Those in Washington
who are pushing such a plan have not given up. Please know that I will
continue to stand against this takeover while spreading the word about
patient-centered reforms, like H.R. 3400, presented by the Republican Study
Committee and others. It is heartening to know that the American Seniors
Association will be there to help.
